Oaxacasoft

I suppose that, if you are reading this, you might be wondering what the URL means.

I'm a programmer working in New York as a consultant for the financial industry. I've worked on a lot of interesting projects, and hope to continue to be able to do so. There are many bright people here, but there are also smart people in other places who haven't had the same kind of opportunities that I've had.

The place I'm really interested in is Oaxaca, Mexico. If you've ever been there, you'll already know that it is a very beautiful place that should be famous for a lot more than the section 22 of the teachers' union and the unfortunate events of 2006. But besides the art scene, the friendly people, the fabulous weather, the gorgeous scenery and the out-of-this-world cuisine, there is also a technical university in Huajuapan whose student teams have won the ACM's Mexico-Central America competitive exams several years in a row now, beating out the much more famous Tecnologico de Monterrey.

What do Huajuapan's students do after they graduate? This is something I'm very interested in learning about. I have heard that there is a new software company called Kadasoft that is associated with the university, but I assume that many of its former students find their way to Mexico City, Monterrey, or the U.S. in search of work. Dreaming

If computers could dream, what would they dream of? Faster processors with bigger memory chips? Uninterrupted power-supplies? Air-conditioned storage rooms with dust-free operating environments?

Would they dream of software office suites, 3-D games, operating system upgrades?

Would they dream about people? Ordinary users like you and me? Or J.C.R. Licklider and Linus Torvalds? Would their dreams about Bill Gates be nightmares?

Would they dream about starting their own software business? Or about establishing an ideal state?

What would they want, what would they long for?

What would the word "justice" mean to a computer? Or how about beauty?

Would truth only be a matter of zeroes and ones?

Is it so for us?
